Technical information for firewall administrators:
|
Webcasting can be viewed either archived or in real-time. Usually no special setup is needed for viewing archived webcasts, however better reception and resource utilization can be achieved through the next set of simple guidelines. Attending real-time webcasts requires some more considerations.
If opening ports in your firewall is necessary you may consider opening these ports only to the *.you-niversity.com domain server or to any destination server under you-niversity.com FQDN (fully qualified domain name).
Recorded (archived) webcasting
Have your firewall NOT block content and pop ups from the *.you-niversity.com domain. Have your anti-spam software NOT block content and pop ups from the *.you-niversity.com domain.
One of the next 3 options should be setup:
- To guarantee the best reception quality it's recommended that the next set of ports are open:
- Outgoing traffic to destination port: UDP 1755.
- Incoming traffic: UDP ports between port 1024-5000. Either make sure all these ports are open or you may use the Media Player configuration dialog box on client computers to force players use a specific UDP port and then open only this port for incoming traffic. For example: Click the Configure button on the You-Tools (the blue and purple button below the volume control) and use the Advanced tab and then go to 'Change ...'. You can now select to use port 1050 for UDP connections.
- The second best setup would be for the next port to be open:
- Outgoing traffic to destination port: TCP 1755
- The third best would be for the next port to be open (note: this is the usual port that is open for surfing the web so usually choosing this option requires no further action):
- TCP port 80 for HTTP streaming (utilizing only this port will require larger bandwidth otherwise leaser reception quality will be experienced).
Your firewall should also NOT content-filter Microsoft Media player content.
Live online webcasting programs
In addition to the above settings participating in live (real-time) online webcasting programs requires:
- Have your firewall not block: Java objects and Windows Media Player traffic.
- Have Java Virtual Machine installed and enabled on the local computer.
- (Recommended but not mandatory) Open destination TCP port 3333 for outgoing traffic.
